Formed Elements in Blood
Granulocytes are leukocytes with granules in their cytoplasm that are visible with a light microscope
- Basophils: release histamine; work in allergic responses (0.5-1%)
- blue granules (basic dye)
- Eosinophils: phagocytic; toxic against parasites and helminths (2-4%)
- red granules (acidic dye), bilobed nucleus
- Neutrophils: professional phagocytes; work in early stages of infection (60-70%)
- poor staining granules, multilobed nucleus
